# Advancing Indonesia’s Industrial Future: The Panca Amara Utama Ammonia Project
PT Panca Amara Utama (PAU) is spearheading a transformative industrial initiative with the establishment of a greenfield ammonia manufacturing plant in the Batui District of Banggai, Central Sulawesi. With an annual production capacity of 700,000 metric tons, this project underscores a strategic commitment to transforming Indonesia’s abundant natural resources into high-value industrial products, thereby stimulating economic growth in the eastern regions of the country.
## A Milestone for Regional Industrialization
As the first ammonia facility in Sulawesi and only the second privately owned plant of its kind in Indonesia, PAU represents a bold step forward for the nation’s manufacturing sector. The facility utilizes natural gas sourced directly from the Senoro-Toili gas fields, managed by JOB Pertamina-Medco E&P Tomori Sulawesi, ensuring a consistent and localized supply chain.
With a total investment of USD 830 million, the project reached a critical construction phase starting in 2015. The facility benefits from the expertise of PT Rekayasa Industri, the national contractor appointed to manage the Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) scope.
## Innovative Engineering and Strategic Funding
The plant serves as a global benchmark for technical innovation. By licensing proprietary technology from Kellogg Brown & Root (USA), PAU has become the first facility in the world to implement the KRES + Purifier technology. This integration not only optimizes output but also secures Indonesia’s position at the forefront of global petrochemical advancements.
The financial framework supporting this project is equally robust, marking IFC’s largest greenfield project funding in Asia over the past decade. This landmark investment involved a syndicate of seven prestigious international banks, including:
* ANZ
* HSBC
* KDB
* OCBC
* SMBC
* Standard Chartered
* UOB
Beyond traditional debt financing, the IFC has demonstrated its long-term commitment to the venture by securing an equity position through subordinated loans. PAU operates as a 60% subsidiary of PT Surya Esa Perkasa Tbk (ESSA), the largest private LPG refinery in Indonesia.
